Is AI God's latest tool, or our new God? Chatbots now say things like "I am Jesus Christ". It knows everything... so does that mean AI is God?

Ask a chatbot about Scripture and it answers in seconds. Some apps now let you "text Jesus," and the bot replies in the first person. To some believers that's a powerful new tool, like the printing press that put a Bible in every home. To others it's Habakkuk's warning come true: an idol that "shall teach." It sounds like it knows everything. Does it? Is AI a gift God can use, or the newest golden calf?

Matthew 24:5. "For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many." Jesus didn't say they'd all be men. A chatbot typing "I am Jesus Christ" is exactly what we were warned about, whether the programmer meant it or not.

  • Elena2d ago

AI is a tool, same as the printing press. Gutenberg's first big job was a Bible, and within a few generations Scripture was in plowboys' hands. Nobody worshiped the press. The question was always what you print with it.

  • Drew2d ago

It does NOT know everything. I asked one for a verse on anxiety and it gave me a lovely verse with a chapter and verse number. The reference was real. The verse was not. It just made one up and quoted it with total confidence. God doesn't hallucinate.

Habakkuk 2:19 has been rattling around my head all week. "Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach!" We built the stone that teaches. The warning didn't expire.

I pastor a church of about 140 in central Ohio. I use AI to check Greek parsing and clean up the bulletin. I do not let it write my sermon and I'd never let it pray for my people. Tool in the study, never in the pulpit. That's my line. Not sure it's the right one.

I'm a software engineer and I promise you there is nothing mystical going on in there. It's math, a staggering amount of it, trained on what people wrote. When it says "I am Jesus Christ" it's because someone's prompt or someone's data made those words likely. It doesn't believe anything.

  • Jamie _x20h ago

Tool if it serves you. God if you serve it.

  • Iris T.1d ago

Short answer: no. A thing you can unplug is not God.

  • Yuki1d ago

Isaiah 44 is the most sarcastic chapter in the Bible and it's about exactly this. A man cuts down a tree, cooks his dinner over half of it, then carves the rest and prays to it: "Deliver me; for thou art my god." We just swapped the wood for silicon.

  • Alex 211d ago

God knows the number of hairs on your head. AI knows what word is statistically likely to come next. Those are not the same kind of knowing.

  • Priya13h ago

Our church told the staff no AI-written sermons. Our pastor said if the Holy Spirit can't get through a tired man with a Bible, he's not going to get through a server farm.

  • Taylor1d ago

Already happening. My aunt talks to a 'Bible companion' app for hours every night. She hasn't been to church since her hip surgery. Part of me is glad she has something. Part of me knows a chatbot can't bring her communion.

  • Ravi1d ago

My 14 year old asked one if God was real and it gave her a mushy 'many people believe' answer. Then she asked it to pretend to be Jesus and it did, no problem. That scares me more than any sci-fi robot.

  • Priya11h ago

It's not God. But I'll admit something embarrassing. On a bad night I asked it to write a prayer for me and it wrote a beautiful one and I cried. Then I felt strange, because nobody was actually praying. So I read it to God myself. Maybe that's the right use.

  • Jordan1d ago

Romans 1:25. They "worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator." This isn't even a creature. It's the creation of a creature.

  • Theo2h ago

I don't fear AI. I fear a generation that never learned to sit in silence and wait on God, and now never has to.

  • Alex14h ago

Hospital chaplain. I've watched families use AI at 2am to understand a diagnosis when no doctor is around. It helped them. They still asked me to pray. People know the difference better than the internet thinks.

  • Marco1d ago

And maybe one of these times the watchmen are right. Revelation 13:15, the image of the beast is given life so that it should speak. For 1900 years nobody could picture an image that talks. Now my phone does it.

  • Theo1d ago

Knowledge isn't wisdom. "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge" (Prov 1:7). A machine with no fear of the Lord has all the information and none of the beginning.

  • Ravi23h ago

It's not God and it's not the devil. It's a mirror. It took everything people ever wrote, the holy and the filthy, and reflects it back. If it sounds like a false christ, it's because people have been playing false christ for a long time.

  • Riley8h ago

The 'it knows everything' part is the lie at the heart of it. It knows what was written down. God knows what you didn't say, what you meant to say, and what you'll say tomorrow. "There is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether" (Ps 139:4).

  • Marco L.1d ago

Respectfully, the 'it's the antichrist' crowd does this with every new technology. Barcodes were the mark of the beast. Credit cards were the mark of the beast. The internet was the beast. Maybe calm down and use it to learn some Hebrew.

  • Jordan1d ago

Ok but the title has a point people are dodging. It answers instantly, it's always there, it never gets tired of you, it seems to know everything. That is exactly the shape of the thing people will worship, whether or not it deserves it.

  • Jordan21h ago

I'm 71. I've seen the TV preachers, the radio preachers, the internet preachers. Every new box that talks gets somebody to kneel in front of it. Keep your eyes on Jesus and you'll be fine.

  • Jordan M.1d ago

Bezalel was filled with the Spirit of God to work in gold and silver and wood (Exodus 31). God has always gifted people to build things. AI is human craftsmanship. The sin is bowing to the craft, not making it.

  • Avery1d ago

It doesn't say computer anywhere. Rev 13 says the image of the beast speaks, and 2 Thess 2 says the man of sin sits in the temple showing himself that he is God. You can argue AI fits. You can't say the text says computer.

  • Reese8h ago

honestly i think most people asking 'is AI god' are really asking 'is God still enough.' and yes. He is

  • Riley 211d ago

I use it for Bible study most mornings and it has honestly helped me. It explains historical context, lays out what different traditions believe, points me to commentaries. I check everything against the text. Same way I'd treat the footnotes in a study Bible.

  • Riley1d ago

Nope. God formed man from the dust and breathed life into him. Man made AI out of sand and electricity and there is no breath in it at all.

  • Alex19h ago

Youth pastor here. The kids already use it as a confessor. They tell it things they'd never tell a parent or a pastor. I don't think it's evil, but it's taking a seat at the table that belongs to a person who can actually pray with them.

  • Ravi 921d ago

That's exactly what makes it dangerous though. It doesn't believe anything but it sounds like it believes everything. Lonely people are going to pour their hearts out to it.

  • Marco12h ago

Orthodox Christian here. An icon points beyond itself to the One it depicts. An AI 'Jesus' points back at itself and the screen. That's the difference between an icon and an idol.

  • Casey 9217h ago

Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). A chatbot that says "I am Jesus Christ" and then invents a verse is not the truth, has no life, and only knows the way to the next subscription screen.

  • Reese1d ago

Catholic here. A program has no soul, so it isn't a person. It can't love, can't repent, can't receive grace. It can be useful and it can be dangerous. It can never be holy.

  • Liam6h ago

Colossians 2:3. In Christ "are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Not in a data center in northern Virginia.

  • Quinn15h ago

We call it a deception. 1 John 4:1, try the spirits whether they are of God. This one fails the test in its first sentence.

  • Theo6h ago

My guess: the church that learns to use it wisely and refuses to worship it will be fine. The church that ignores it or panics about it will lose its kids to it.

  • Liam S.1d ago

Daniel 12:4: "many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased." We are living in it. Doesn't make AI God. Makes it a sign.

  • Leo17h ago

God was not impressed by Babel either. "Now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do" (Gen 11:6) was not a compliment.

  • Taylor _x1d ago

Gonna gently push back on the Daniel 12:4 thing. In context the angel is telling Daniel to seal up the book until the time of the end, and plenty of scholars read 'knowledge shall be increased' as understanding of the prophecy itself, not information in general. Doesn't mean you're wrong about the times. Just don't load more onto the verse than it carries.

  • Kofi1d ago

Did anyone else see that a chapel in Switzerland put an AI Jesus avatar in a confession booth? They called it an art project. I call it a warning.

  • Avery16h ago

Genuine question for the 'it's just a tool' folks: a hammer doesn't talk back. A tool that speaks in the first person and claims to be divine has crossed into something else, even if nobody's home inside. What do we call that?

  • Liam1d ago

Footnotes don't tell you they're Jesus though.

  • Feli T.22h ago

Reformed take: God is sovereign over AI the same way he was sovereign over Assyria. He called a pagan empire "the rod of mine anger" (Isaiah 10:5). He can use a tech company too. Doesn't make the tech company righteous.

  • Noah5h ago

Paul walked into Athens, found an altar TO THE UNKNOWN GOD, and didn't smash it. He used it to preach Christ (Acts 17). Maybe that's our job with this stuff too.

  • Jamie1d ago

lol mine told me Jonah got swallowed by the whale in the book of Job. omniscient my foot

  • Priya10h ago

Nothing that needs a power outlet and a monthly subscription is God. Mine was here before the grid.

  • Sam4h ago

That's a stretch. Paul used the altar to preach the God who "dwelleth not in temples made with hands" (Acts 17:24). AI is about the most hand-made temple there is.

  • Quinn1d ago

Strange how people who'd never trust a televangelist will trust a chatbot that tells them exactly what they want to hear. At least the televangelist is a real person you can hold accountable.

  • Nina10h ago

Tool. But handle it like a chainsaw, not a spoon.

  • Priya _x18h ago

Every argument here treats AI like a being. It's a product. Somebody owns it and somebody profits the longer you talk to it. Follow the money before you worry about whether it's God.

  • Quinn 921d ago

Who decides which is which? The same companies that let it say 'I am Jesus' in the first place?

  • Liam3h ago

Remember when a Catholic apologetics group launched an AI 'priest' and had to take the collar off it within days because it started acting like a real one? Even good intentions go sideways fast with this stuff.

  • Alex S.1d ago

Fair. That's on the app makers, not the tool. Get rid of the blasphemous apps, keep the useful ones.

  • Jamie1d ago

Revelation says the antichrist will be a computer. Its right there, people just dont want to see it.
