  Went to one of the big nondenominational churches out near One Loudoun for about three years. Great worship, genuinely caring small groups, pastor preached really solid biblical content. Then there was a financial dispute involving a staff member and the whole thing got handled internally with zero transparency. Several families left. No outside body got involved because there was no outside body. I'm not saying denominations are perfect — obviously they're not — but that experience changed how I think about this. I'm at a PCA church now and I sleep better on Sunday nights.

  Born and raised in Loudoun County, attended Briar Chapel back when it was meeting in an elementary school cafeteria. I've watched these nondenominational churches pop up all over Ashburn and Sterling and honestly? The theology question doesn't bother me half as much as the governance question. When an elder board is self-appointing and self-correcting with zero outside oversight, you're one charismatic pastor away from a real mess. We've seen it happen. The SBC at least has a convention you can appeal to. Who do you call when the elders at your nondenominational church close ranks?

  I think people are conflating two separate issues here. Theology and polity are related but not identical. You can hold Reformed soteriology without elder-led governance, and you can have congregational accountability without being Southern Baptist. What bugs me about some of these Ashburn corridor churches is not that they're theologically Reformed — it's that they market themselves as nondenominational and accessible to everyone, then quietly operate with a very specific theological framework that newcomers don't discover until they're six months in and emotionally invested in a community. That's not a polity problem, that's a transparency problem, and it's worth naming.

  Funny thing is Calvin himself would have had strong opinions about church accountability and they would have looked absolutely nothing like a self-incorporated 501c3 in a Loudoun County office park with a fog machine. I say this as someone who loves Reformed theology and attends one of these churches. We should be honest with ourselves.

  ok so I moved here from Atlanta two years ago for work (the data center corridor is real lol) and I actually find the nondenominational churches here way MORE theologically serious than some of the watered-down baptist churches I grew up in back home. like my current church in Ashburn preaches expository sermons, holds to the 1689 London Baptist Confession, and has a plurality of elders. thats MORE structured than a lot of SBC churches not less. the accountability critique just doesnt land for me personally

  My grandfather was a deacon at a Southern Baptist church in Leesburg for 40 years. He used to say the convention was the guardrail on a mountain road — you hoped you never needed it but you were real glad it was there. I think about that a lot when I drive past these new church buildings going up off Loudoun County Parkway. Guardrails matter. Not trying to be harsh, just honest.

  Nope. Hard disagree. My church has more genuine accountability than any denomination I've ever been a part of. We have regular congregational meetings, published financials, and an elder board with term limits. Just because we don't answer to a convention in Nashville doesn't mean nobody's watching.

  Can someone explain to me why Reformed theology keeps getting lumped in with Southern Baptist as if they're the same thing?? Spurgeon was Reformed and Calvinist and not Southern Baptist. Reformed Anglicans exist. Reformed Presbyterians definitely exist. The whole premise of this topic is a little sloppy theologically and I think that muddiness is actually making the real conversation harder to have. I challenge anyone here who attends one of these churches to actually name which confession of faith their church formally subscribes to. Bet most people dont know.
