Add your commentSomeone please explain to me why nobody is getting mad at the LEAGUES for scheduling tournaments on Sunday mornings. Why are Christians just accepting the premise that this is inevitable? Have any Newark-area parents actually organized and pushed back on the scheduling? Because that seems like the actual Christian response here rather than debating whether to show up or not.
Our family does this: we stream the service in the van on the way to the tournament. Worship music, the sermon, we even do a little offering envelope the kids fill out. Is it perfect? No. Does it keep Christ at the center of our Sunday even when we're pulling into Canandaigua at 9am? Yes. Don't judge what you haven't tried.
Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Mark 2:27. Look it up. I'm so tired of Wayne County church culture treating Sunday morning like it's some kind of golden idol. The legalism in some of these congregations is genuinely driving teenagers away from faith permanently. Pick your battles.
My son played travel baseball for three summers and we skipped church probably 60% of the season each year. I told myself it was fine. Told myself all the things people are saying in this thread. He's 19 now and faith means nothing to him. I'm not saying it's a direct line of cause and effect but I think about those Sunday mornings a lot more than I used to.
Streaming church in the van is NOT the same as gathered worship with the body of Christ and I will die on that hill. Hebrews 10:25 doesn't say 'forsake not the assembling together unless there's a U10 soccer bracket in Clifton Springs.' The erosion happens one exception at a time. One tournament becomes every tournament becomes your kid has no church community by the time they're 15.
We've been members at First Baptist on Mason Street for going on 22 years and I'll tell you straight up — we never once let our boys miss a Sunday service for a baseball game. Not once. And guess what? Both of them still played travel ball, still made the tournaments, still had a full childhood. You just have to be the parent and make the call. The coach will respect you for it eventually.
born and raised Wayne County here, grandparents farmed out past Lyons, and I remember when Sunday was genuinely different from every other day around here. Stores closed, fields empty, families together. I'm not saying we go back to blue laws but we gave something up and we keep acting like we didn't.
The Sabbath commandment is literally in the top ten. TEN. Not the top fifty, not the top hundred. The top TEN. There is no version of Christian faithfulness that treats one of the Ten Commandments as optional when soccer tournaments are involved. I don't know how this is even a debate.
ok so here's my hot take that nobody wants to hear: if your kid is literally the only Christian witness on that travel team, maybe God PUT them there on Sunday mornings. ever think about that? my daughter prays with two of her teammates before every game now. tell me that's not ministry.
lol my parents dragged me to church every single Sunday growing up in Newark and the second I turned 18 I never went back. maybe let the kid breathe once in a while
Just moved here from Rochester six months ago and honestly I was NOT prepared for how intense the travel sports culture is out here in Newark. Back at our old church we had maybe one family dealing with this. Here it feels like half the Sunday school is gone every other week from April through July. Pastor Dave hasn't said a word about it either which surprises me.
I actually looked into this and the Sunday Sabbath for Christians is technically not the same as the Jewish Shabbat which runs Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. So the whole 'fourth commandment' argument people make doesn't even apply directly to Sunday morning baseball games from a strict theological standpoint. The early church met on the first day but it wasn't legislated the same way. Just saying there's more nuance here than people admit.
hard disagree with basically this entire thread. sports teaches kids discipline, teamwork, perseverance, humility — all fruits of the Spirit basically. God can meet your kid on a baseball diamond in Newark just as easy as in a pew. yall are gatekeeping grace.
