Add your commentI drove 25 minutes to a multi-site campus for two years. Loved the worship, loved the teaching series, genuinely felt spiritually fed. Then my dad got sick and I realized I did not have a single person from that church who knew his name. Transferred my membership to a small nondenominational congregation three blocks from my house. Best decision I ever made. My dad passed in February and those 80 people showed up in ways I still can't talk about without crying.
Born and raised in North KC, went to a tiny Methodist church on Armour Road for 23 years. When that congregation finally closed its doors in 2019 it broke my heart. And yeah, half those families had slowly drifted to the big campuses down south over the prior decade. I'm not pointing fingers — people go where they feel fed — but I do think we need to be honest about cause and effect here. Small churches don't close because God stopped blessing them. They close because we stopped showing up.
The megachurch defenders always bring up programming and resources like church is a gym membership you're comparison shopping. More kids' classes, better coffee bar, professional worship band — okay sure. But I've watched people attend those places for YEARS and never get a phone call when they miss three weeks. At my little church on Swift Ave if you're gone two Sundays somebody's knocking on your door with a casserole. That's the church. That's it.
Grew up NKC, left, came back. What I notice is that this argument usually gets louder right around the time a big church announces a new campus near here. It happened in 2017 and it's happening again now. The small congregations feel the threat and I think that anxiety is worth paying attention to pastorally. Instead of debating online maybe the big churches and small churches in this area should actually be talking to each other. Radical concept I know.
Hot take nobody wants to hear: the megachurch campus model is basically a franchise and your "campus pastor" is a middle manager. Fight me.
Real question for the small-church-is-always-better crowd: what do you say to the single parent who works two jobs and needs Wednesday night childcare, grief support groups, Spanish-language services, AND a solid sermon all under one roof? Because the 90 person congregation down the street from me is wonderful but they are running on fumes with three volunteers and a part-time pastor. The megachurch isn't the villain here. Underfunding small churches is the villain.
I just moved here from Overland Park six months ago and honestly the first thing I did was look for the biggest church with the best kids program because I have three kids under eight and survival is the name of the game on Sunday morning. A small congregation with twelve children's volunteers simply cannot do what a 400-person kids ministry can. I feel guilty about it sometimes reading threads like this but I also need my children to actually want to come to church.
Scripture is pretty clear on this honestly. Acts 2:46 says they met house to house. The early church was hyper local by necessity and by design. The megachurch model where you drive past six neighborhoods to sit in an auditorium and watch a sermon on a screen from a pastor in another zip code... I just don't see that in the New Testament anywhere. Not trying to be mean. I'm just saying the burden of proof is on the commuter Christians here.
Nobody is making anyone do anything. Drive the 20 minutes. Walk down the block. God is in both buildings. This debate feels like people who already made their choice needing the other side to be wrong so they feel better about it. Can we just let Christians be Christians?
okay but can we talk about accountability for a second. i was a member of a 90 person church for four years and everyone knew everyones business. my divorce was basically a congregational event lol. sometimes anonymity isnt the worst thing in the world. theres something to be said for being able to worship without your neighbor knowing your credit score
Theologically speaking, the New Testament actually never uses the word "megachurch" so technically they aren't biblical at all. The Bible only ever endorses congregations of 100 people or fewer. Just stating facts.
