When the national headlines are constantly about abuse cover-ups and political grandstanding, you can't act shocked that families in Clay County are quietly slipping out the back door on a Sunday morning. Nondenominational isn't a theological statement for most of these people — it's a survival instinct. Argue about confessionalism all you want, but fix your house first.
Born and raised in North KC, attended First Baptist on Armour Road for 35 years. Let me tell you something — when my grandkids started drifting over to that big nondenominational place off 169, I didn't panic. I prayed. But after sitting in on a few of their services, I'll be honest: I couldn't tell you what they actually believe about baptism, the Lord's Supper, or church discipline. It's all worship music and felt-need sermons. The 2000 Baptist Faith and Message isn't a cage — it's a compass. You throw away the compass, you're just wandering and feeling good about it.
The SBC was founded in 1845, not 1834, and in Augusta, Georgia yes — but getting the date wrong in the middle of making a point doesn't help your credibility. More importantly though, pointing to the original sin of an institution doesn't automatically validate leaving it for something with zero accountability structure. Every institution has a flawed history. The Reformation churches do. The Catholic Church certainly does. The answer is reform, not just vibes-based church shopping.
Can I ask something directly to the NKC locals defending the confessional model — when's the last time YOUR SBC church actually taught through the Baptist Faith and Message in a Sunday morning service? Not a Wednesday night optional class. Sunday morning. Main stage. Because I grew up SBC in this area and I can count on one hand the number of times I heard our confession referenced from the pulpit. You can't complain about people leaving for churches with shallow theology if your own church never actually taught the deep stuff.
My aunt and uncle spent 40 years building relationships at their SBC church in Gladstone. Taught Sunday school, went on mission trips, practically lived there. They visited a nondenominational church with their daughter last Easter and by June they had transferred membership. My aunt told me she finally feels like she can just worship without all the 'business meeting drama.' I get it. I do. But I also think about who's going to pass down the actual content of the faith to their grandchildren and I worry. Feelings fade. Doctrine sticks.
hard disagree with the whole premise here. spirit led unity doesnt require a denomination stamp of approval. my family left a SBC church in liberty two years ago not because we stopped believing scripture but because the politics inside that building got unbearable. the nondenominational church we attend now preaches expository verse-by-verse every single week. confession who?
Just moved here from Wichita six months ago and honestly the sheer number of community churches up here in the Northland surprised me. Like every strip mall has one. That said I think people romanticize 'nondenominational' as if it means no theology. It just means the theology is unaccountable. At least with a Baptist association somebody can call a church out. Who corrects a nondenominational pastor who goes off the rails? His own elder board that he personally selected? Good luck with that.
Fun fact for anyone who doesn't know: the Southern Baptist Convention was actually founded in 1834 in Augusta, Georgia, as a split from northern Baptists over the slavery issue. So when people talk about 'heritage' and 'roots,' maybe pump the brakes a little on how noble that founding story really is.
