Should Romulus churches add Saturday evening services to accommodate the thousands of shift workers at DTW who cannot consistently make Sunday morning, or does moving away from Sunday undermine the Lord's Day?

  I work the 4am baggage ramp at DTW and I havent seen the inside of a church on a Sunday morning in three years. THREE YEARS. My faith hasnt gone anywhere but my community sure has. If Romulus churches want to actually reach the people who literally live in the shadow of that airport, Saturday evening is not compromise — its mission. Call it whatever theological name makes you feel better, just open the doors.

  Born and raised in Romulus. My dad worked grounds crew at Metro for 31 years — rotating shifts, missed holidays, missed everything. Our church at the time offered him absolutely nothing flexible and he eventually just... drifted. I watched it happen slowly. If one Saturday evening service a week could have kept him in community I would have given anything for that. Dont tell me about doctrinal purity when I watched a man lose his faith in a parking lot of missed Sundays.

  Here is what nobody is saying out loud: some of these same pastors worried about Saturday services have online campuses where people watch from their couch in their pajamas and that counts as attendance. You want to talk about what erodes the Lord's Day? Start there. At least the baggage handler who comes Saturday night is SHOWING UP IN PERSON to worship with a body of believers. Priorities are a little scrambled in this debate.

  Genuine question for the Sunday-only crowd: Do you also refuse to attend Christmas Eve services because that sometimes falls on a Saturday? Do you refuse midweek Bible studies because those arent Sunday either? The Lord's Day argument starts falling apart the moment you look at what most evangelical churches already DO throughout the week. A Saturday service isnt replacing Sunday. Its addition, not subtraction.

  Actually the Catholic Church has offered Saturday vigil Masses since the 1960s and nobody serious considers it a theological crisis. Protestants acting like this is some radical new idea need to do a little more homework before they sound the alarm. Also for the record the airport employs like 18,000 people directly and probably twice that in connected jobs. Romulus has a specific pastoral responsibility here that most suburbs just dont face.

  The early church met on the first day of the week. Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2. This isnt ambiguous. Saturday is the Jewish Sabbath, Sunday is the Lord's Day — the Resurrection Day. Im sympathetic to shift workers, I really am, but the answer is to advocate for your schedule, find a church in a different community, stream the sermon, SOMETHING. We dont restructure 2,000 years of Christian practice because the airport runs 24/7.

  My understanding is that the biblical Sabbath command was specifically fulfilled in Christ and that Christians are not bound to a particular calendar day at all — Colossians 2:16-17 pretty clearly addresses this. So the whole "Sunday is non-negotiable" framing is actually the weaker theological position historically speaking. The Reformers debated this extensively. This isnt a new controversy and the answer has never been as simple as some folks in this thread are making it.

  Somebody correct me if Im wrong but I think Woodhaven Community Church or maybe one of the Assembly of God congregations near Eureka Road already does something like a Saturday service? Thought I heard that from a neighbor who works cargo. Point being this isnt even hypothetical anymore for some local churches — might be worth just asking them how its going before we debate it like its the end of civilization.

  I moved here from Grand Rapids about two years ago and honestly the DTW situation is something I did not anticipate when thinking about church planting strategy for this area. Back home everybody pretty much had normal weekday jobs. Here half the congregation candidates work at the airport, Westin, rental car facilities, cargo operations — and their schedules rotate every six weeks. You cannot build a sustainable Sunday-only congregation in Romulus the same way you would in Cascade Township. The context demands a different approach.
