  Born and raised in Romulus, went to Eureka Road Baptist my whole life. I'll say this plainly: if you hand someone a box of groceries and never tell them WHY you're doing it, you've missed the whole point. The gospel is the reason we show up. Hiding it to seem more palatable isn't kindness, it's cowardice. Love tells the truth.

  This debate has been happening in Wayne County churches since before I can remember and I'm 71 years old. Both sides act like they invented the argument. What I've seen in my decades here is that the churches that ACTUALLY stayed consistent — showing up week after week, knowing people's names, being present — those were the ones that saw real spiritual fruit. The ones that did a big evangelism push at every food distribution mostly just made people feel used. Consistency is its own witness.

  Actually the feeding of the 5,000 happened RIGHT AFTER Jesus had been teaching them all day (Matthew 14, Mark 6), so the idea that He just quietly handed out bread with zero proclamation is historically and biblically wrong. I'm not trying to be rude but that confidently stated point up there needs a correction. The word and the deed were ALWAYS together in Jesus's ministry. That's the whole model.

  The phrase "attaching strings" is doing a lot of work in this conversation and I think its framing is unfair to evangelical churches. There's a difference between coercion — "you must listen or you don't get food" — and transparency, which is "here's who we are and why we do this." No serious ministry I know of in this area is withholding groceries from anyone. They're just not ashamed of their motivation. Why is stating your motivation suddenly oppressive? We'd never say a secular nonprofit can't explain its philosophy.

  okay so i volunteer at one of the pantries near the airport corridor every other saturday and honestly? the people coming through are exhausted. they got three kids, a Spirit flight at 5am they're already stressed about, or they just got laid off from one of the cargo facilities. the LAST thing they need is someone cornering them with a salvation script before they get their green beans. serve first. SERVE FIRST. if they ask why you do it, THEN you talk.

  I moved to Romulus from Dearborn about two years ago for work near the terminal area. Coming in as an outsider I noticed the food insecurity here is genuinely serious — this isn't a theoretical debate, families are struggling. What struck me was that the one ministry that seemed most effective was a small nondenominational group that just... talked to people like they were people. They mentioned their faith naturally in conversation. Nobody felt ambushed. Nobody felt like a project. Maybe that's the third way everyone's missing.

  My grandmother used to bring food to neighbors off Goddard Road every Christmas, no church affiliation required, no gospel tract in the bag. She was the most Christlike person I ever knew. Sometimes the sermon is the sandwich. I'm not interested in debating this further.

  Attaching strings to charity is literally the definition of conditional love. Jesus fed the 5,000 and didn't make them sit through a sermon first. Look it up.

  Can someone on this forum tell me which Romulus-area churches are actually running regular pantries right now? I keep hearing about this issue but I cant find a consolidated list anywhere. My family is trying to donate canned goods and we want to make sure it actually gets to people in our zip code and not shipped somewhere else. Genuine question not trying to derail the debate.
