In the age of AI only losers still believe in God.

AI can write a sermon, answer any Bible question in seconds and explain the universe better than your pastor. So why would any smart person still need God? Faith, the argument goes, is now for the scared and the left behind. Believers fire back that some of the sharpest minds in science and tech still pray, and that the more our machines know, the hungrier people get for what no machine can give. Weakness or wisdom? Pick a side and tell us why.

They crucified our God naked on a Roman cross. By every standard Rome had, He was the biggest loser who ever lived. Christians have been called losers for 2,000 years. Rome is gone. We're still here. 1 Corinthians 1:27: "God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise."

  • Theo1d ago

Atheist here. I'll defend the title, minus the word "losers," which is just rage bait. For most of history God was the answer to whatever we couldn't explain. Thunder, disease, where life came from, how we think. One by one, science took those over. Now we have machines that write, reason and comfort people at 3am. The human mind was the last gap. It's closing. So what exactly is left for God to do?

    • Drew M.1d ago

Explain why there's something rather than nothing. Explain why the universe runs on math at all. Explain why anything should be true rather than just useful. AI doesn't close those gaps. It's built on top of them.

    • Theo1d ago

"We don't know yet" is an honest answer to all three. "Therefore God" isn't.

    • Nina R.1d ago

And "therefore no God" isn't either. You just took a different leap and called yours neutral.

  • Ravi K.1d ago

I build machine learning systems for a living. Eleven years now. I've trained models from scratch and watched every number move. Knowing exactly how it works is the reason it doesn't threaten my faith at all. There's nobody in there. It's the most impressive mirror ever built, and a mirror can't tell you why you exist. I still pray on the drive in. Half my team knows. Nobody's called me a loser yet but I'll keep you posted.

  • Jordan1d ago

Honest post. I'm 26, raised Southern Baptist, and I use AI something like six hours a day for work. Somewhere in the last two years God started feeling... smaller? Not disproven. Just quieter. I haven't told my parents. I'm not asking to be talked out of it or talked back into it. I just want to know if anyone else feels this.

    • Riley 211d ago

Yes. Every word of this. You're not the only one.

    • Elena B.1d ago

Friend, quiet isn't the same as gone. Elijah didn't find God in the wind or the earthquake or the fire. He found Him in "a still small voice" (1 Kings 19:12). Six hours a day of the loudest invention in history will drown out a still small voice every time. Try one week. Laptop shut after 9pm, one Psalm before bed. Then come back and tell us.

    • Jordan14h ago

ok. I'll try it. Laptop closed after 9. Not promising anything, but I'll come back and say how it went.

  • Liam S.1d ago

Blaise Pascal. Isaac Newton. Georges Lemaître, the Catholic priest who first proposed what became the Big Bang. Francis Collins, who ran the Human Genome Project. Donald Knuth, basically the father of computer algorithms, who wrote a whole book on Bible verses. Losers, every one of them.

    • Iris L.1d ago

Love the list but maybe leave Newton off the team jersey. He privately rejected the Trinity. The rest hold up.

    • Omar1d ago

Name-dropping dead geniuses is an appeal to authority. Newton also spent years on alchemy. Brilliant people believe wrong things all the time.

    • Casey M.1d ago

Sure, but the title is what made this about who's smart. You can't call believers losers and then cry "appeal to authority" when someone lists the believers.

  • Quinn1d ago

Try this. Ask your AI why cruelty is actually wrong. Not unpopular, not bad for society. Wrong. You'll get a smooth paragraph about wellbeing and consensus. Then ask it why wellbeing matters. Another smooth paragraph. Keep going. It's turtles all the way down, because all it can do is average what people already typed. Somebody has to be the bottom turtle.

  • Maya R.1d ago

My husband died in March. Pancreatic cancer, eleven weeks from diagnosis to funeral. I'll be honest, I asked a chatbot things at 3am that I was too ashamed to ask a person. It was kind. It was also nobody. What got me through was the casserole brigade from First Methodist and a God I yelled at for a month straight. A machine can't sit in your kitchen. Call me whatever you want.

  • Alex 921d ago

Someone has to say it. If an adult in 2026 carries a machine that can explain quantum physics in plain English and still believes a man lived three days inside a fish, that's choosing comfort over evidence. "Losers" is harsh. It's not exactly wrong.

    • Sam B.1d ago

Jesus Himself pointed to Jonah as the sign of His resurrection (Matthew 12:40). If the resurrection happened, a fish is the easy part. If it didn't, the fish was never your real problem.

    • Reese1d ago

"a machine that can explain quantum physics" lol. it explains it by repeating what physicists wrote. several of whom go to church on sunday.

    • Kofi 211d ago

You have a machine in your pocket that can explain quantum physics and you're using it to argue with Baptists on a Bible site. who's the loser here

  • Morgan T.1d ago

Chesterton saw this coming a hundred years ago. "When men stop believing in God they don't believe in nothing, they believe in anything." Now they believe in a chatbot.

    • Avery L.1d ago

Love Chesterton, but he never actually wrote that line. It's a paraphrase from a 1930s book about him by Emile Cammaerts. Point still stands. Just quote it right or the atheists in here will eat us alive.

    • Alex 921d ago

"believe in anything" is a funny thing to say from the side with the talking donkey.

  • Diego1d ago

Remember the Silicon Valley engineer who started an actual church to worship AI? Way of the Future. Made the news around 2017, shut down a few years later. The people calling us losers aren't getting rid of God. They're shopping for a new one.

    • Leo K.1d ago

Ray Kurzweil was asked on camera if God exists. His answer: "Not yet." That says it all. They're not atheists, they're contractors.

  • Taylor S.1d ago

"Only losers." Pew surveyed members of the AAAS, one of the biggest science organizations in the country, and about half said they believe in God or some kind of higher power. Old survey, sure. But scientists didn't all lose their faith the week ChatGPT launched.

    • Theo1d ago

"God or some higher power" is doing a lot of work there. It was about a third for an actual God. And at elite research universities most scientists are atheist or agnostic. You know that.

  • Noah1d ago

I'm 22. Half the guys I know who went full atheist at 16 are reading the Bible now and actually showing up to church. Not out of fear. We grew up on screens and algorithms and it left us hollow. AI is the final form of that. Nobody my age dreams of a chatbot girlfriend and an endless feed. We want something real.

    • Jamie1d ago

Same at my school. Our Tuesday night Bible study went from 8 guys to about 40 in two years. Nobody planned a revival. People just started coming.

    • Zara1d ago

Lost young men running to strict religion isn't the flex you think it is. That pattern doesn't usually end well.

  • Feli1d ago

Asked an AI point blank if God exists. It said "that's a deeply personal question and people hold a range of views." Bro, you're supposed to be the smart one.

  • Sam T.1d ago

Atheist for 15 years. What brought me back wasn't an argument. It was holding my daughter the night she was born and realizing I could explain everything about her except why I'd die for her without thinking twice. Evolution can explain the instinct. It can't explain why it felt holy.

  • Priya M.1d ago

The oldest sales pitch ever recorded: "ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil" (Genesis 3:5). All the knowledge you want, in exchange for trusting God a little less. The serpent didn't need a data center. The offer hasn't changed.

  • Hana K.1d ago

Atheist, and this title is embarrassing for my side. My grandmother believed until the day she died and she was the smartest, toughest person I've ever known. You can think someone's wrong without calling them a loser. Argue the idea.

    • Yuki1d ago

Respect. More of this, from both sides.

    • Jamie R.1d ago

Appreciate that, genuinely. Can I ask what would actually change your mind? Not trying to convert you. I just never get a straight answer to that one.

    • Hana K.1d ago

Honestly? Something that couldn't be explained any other way. Not a feeling. Something I could show another person. I know that's probably not how it works for you.

  • Reese T.1d ago

2 Timothy 3:7 describes the AI age better than any tech journalist: "Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth."

  • Morgan1d ago

God helps those who help themselves. Use the AI, work hard, pray. It's not complicated.

    • Iris T.1d ago

That's not in the Bible. It's Ben Franklin's almanac. The Bible says pretty much the opposite: "when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly" (Romans 5:6). God helps the helpless.

    • Morgan1d ago

huh. 40 years I was sure that was Proverbs

  • Avery1d ago

Blaise Pascal built one of the first mechanical calculators as a teenager. You could argue he put us on the road to the computer. He also wrote that "the heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of." He understood the limits of machines almost 400 years ago.

  • Zara1d ago

Every Christian in this thread is dodging the real question. Forget AI. If God is all-powerful and all-good, explain childhood cancer. That's the one that actually made me leave, and I've never heard an answer that didn't make it worse.

  • Leo1d ago

Catholic here. John Paul II said faith and reason are like two wings that lift the human spirit toward the truth. AI is reason with one wing. It can flap all it wants, it's not getting off the ground.

  • Riley M.1d ago

Hot take: AI already writes better sermons than half the pastors in America. If the Holy Spirit is supposedly inspiring them, why does a language model do it better?

    • Quinn R.1d ago

Better sounding, maybe. My pastor sat with my dad for three nights in hospice and then preached that Sunday. The sermon was clumsy. Everyone in that room knew he meant every word. That's the part you can't generate.

    • Taylor1d ago

If you think the point of a sermon is sounding good, that kind of explains this whole thread.

  • Diego B.1d ago

Pastor of a small church in west Texas. Since all this AI stuff took off our Sunday attendance has gone UP, mostly young families. One mom told me she wanted her kids to know "at least one thing that isn't a screen." Did not see that coming.

  • Casey1d ago

Atheism in the age of AI takes its own kind of faith. You have to believe consciousness is just computation, meaning is just chemistry, and your gut sense that some things are truly evil is just evolution playing a trick on you. That's a lot to take on faith.

    • Omar1d ago

It's not faith. It's following the evidence and not adding extra stuff on top. Occam's razor.

    • Nina1d ago

Fun fact, William of Ockham was a Franciscan friar.

  • Sam1d ago

Faith was never a substitute for information. Nobody went to church because Google was down.

  • Iris23h ago

I believe and I doubt, sometimes in the same hour. Mark 9:24 is basically my whole prayer life: "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief." If that makes me a loser, I'm in good company. The man who said it was saying it straight to Jesus' face.

  • Kofi22h ago

Kind of funny. People pray to a voice that answers inside their head and then mock people who talk to a voice that answers on a screen. At least the chatbot actually replies.

    • Maya21h ago

A chatbot answers everyone instantly and never tells anyone no. That's not a relationship, it's a vending machine. Sometimes God says wait. Sometimes He says no. Honestly that's the most real thing about Him.

  • Liam22h ago

Psalm 14:1. "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God." Funny how fast the title flips.

    • Priya21h ago

Not helping. Calling atheists fools is the same move as calling Christians losers. 1 Peter 3:15 says give your answer "with meekness and fear." We can do better than the title did.

  • Yuki R.19h ago

Real question for the believers getting mad in here. If your faith can be shaken by a chatbot, it was hanging by a thread already. And if it can't, why does one headline make everybody this angry?

  • Jamie K.20h ago

Einstein was an atheist and he was the smartest man of the 20th century. Case closed.

    • Noah S.20h ago

Einstein literally said "I'm not an atheist." He also didn't believe in a personal God, so neither side gets to claim him. Case very much not closed.

  • Drew18h ago

I use AI to help me work through the Greek in my Bible reading and it's honestly been a blessing. Tools aren't the problem. Worshiping them is. Nobody here is bowing down to their concordance.

  • Avery 2117h ago

Faith is what people had before they had answers.

    • Elena16h ago

Faith is what people have when they've got all the answers and still need a reason to get out of bed.

  • Theo K.17h ago

"Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?" (Job 38:4). We built a machine that autocompletes sentences and now we're asking God for His credentials.

  • Reese B.16h ago

Seven years sober. An app didn't do that. A Higher Power, a sponsor named Ray and a lot of church basement coffee did. When people say only losers believe, I think, yeah, actually. Losers are exactly who He came for. That's the whole point.

  • Quinn S.15h ago

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and the smartest AI in it, and lose his own soul? (Matthew 16:26, slightly updated)

  • Leo 9214h ago

the title is so dumb its almost impressive. ai cant even tell u why its alive bc its not lol

  • Ravi13h ago

Agnostic. What unsettles me isn't that AI disproves God. It doesn't. It's that it makes it so easy to never sit alone with a hard question long enough to need Him. Whether He's there or not, we're losing the habit of asking.

  • Morgan K.12h ago

Ecclesiastes 1:9, there is no new thing under the sun. Every generation thinks its invention finally made God unnecessary. The printing press, the telescope, the steam engine, the internet. He outlived every one of them.

  • Maya T.11h ago

Quick poll for everyone reading this: since you started using AI, has your faith gotten stronger, weaker, or stayed the same? Mine got weirdly stronger. Curious about yours.

  • Elena R.10h ago

My 15 year old came home and said a kid at school told her only losers believe in God now because AI knows everything. I asked her if she'd ever asked the AI whether it loves her. She laughed. Then she got quiet. We had our first real conversation about God in a year.

  • Taylor 929h ago

Say what you want, in 30 years religion in America will be where astrology is now. A hobby.

    • Casey S.8h ago

People were predicting that in the 60s. Pew's big Religious Landscape Study last year said the Christian decline looks like it's leveling off, around 62%. Strange timeline for a dying religion.

  • Iris B.7h ago

God doesn't need to be newer than AI. He needs to be truer. He is.

  • Noah K.6h ago

Jewish, not Christian, but this one's for all of us. The golem in the old stories was a man-made thing that could work and obey but had no soul. We finally built a golem that talks. Still no soul.

  • Jordan 215h ago

imagine needing an AI to tell you what to think and calling someone else a loser

  • Sam R.4h ago

Both sides in here are doing the same thing. Each one is sure the other side is the scared one.

More debates people can't stop arguing about
