The Independent Fundamental Baptist movement has a well-documented history of spiritual abuse, isolated leadership structures with zero external accountability, and a culture that can silence victims. Trading SBC controversies for IFB controversies is not an upgrade. I say this as someone who spent eight years in an IFB church in Fort Worth before we got out. Please do your research before you go that route.
Born and raised in Saginaw, attended First Baptist my whole life, and I'll tell you what — leaving the SBC isn't the answer. You think the IFB doesn't have its OWN scandals? Go look up what's happened in some of those congregations. At least the SBC has a structure for accountability, even if it's imperfect. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater isn't wisdom, it's just frustration dressed up as conviction.
Fun fact for the room: the SBC was literally founded in 1845 partly over regional disputes. It has survived doctrinal wars, the Conservative Resurgence of the 80s, multiple presidential controversies, and it will survive this too. The convention is made up of autonomous local churches. YOUR church's faithfulness doesn't rise and fall with what some committee decides in a hotel ballroom in Indianapolis. Stay, serve, and hold your elders accountable locally.
lol at people acting like finding a "pure" church is even possible this side of eternity. Newsflash: sinners go to church. Sinners lead churches. The question isn't which denomination has zero problems, it's where can you grow, worship faithfully, and raise your kids in the Word. For my family in Saginaw that's still our SBC church and I'm not apologizing for it.
I appreciate this conversation being had but can we be specific about what "SBC controversies" even means to the people posting here? Because if you're leaving over the political stuff, okay, I understand the frustration. But if you're leaving because of the abuse report findings and the response from leadership, that's a much more serious and legitimate grievance that deserves to be named directly. Lumping everything into "controversies" makes it easier to dismiss. Name the thing.
Honestly the whole "reform from within" argument has been used for like 40 years and I'm not sure what fruit it's producing at this point. Not trying to be cynical but at what point does staying become enabling? Real question for the Tarrant County folks here.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the IFB isn't actually a denomination at all — there's no central organization, no membership rolls, nothing. Every church just calls itself IFB independently. So when people say "consider IFB" they're not really saying anything specific? You could be walking into an incredibly healthy congregation or an absolute disaster and there's no way to vet it from the outside. That ambiguity alone should give families pause.
Just moved to Saginaw from Ohio six months ago and I'm genuinely confused why this is even a debate. Our family found a great non-denominational evangelical church near the 287 corridor that preaches straight from the Word, has solid eldership, and doesn't have a dog in any of these SBC/IFB fights. Why does it have to be one big institution or another? Independent local churches exist and some of them are excellent.
my grandmother would roll over in her grave if she heard people in Saginaw talking about leaving the SBC. that church was her whole community for 60 years. i get that things are different now but sometimes i wonder if we just want church to be easier not holier
we switched to an independent baptist church off Blue Mound Rd about two years ago and honestly best decision our family ever made. smaller congregation, pastor actually knows our names, no denominational politics filtering down from Nashville every six months. sometimes simpler really is better
